In its natural setting, yellow birch grows on rich, black soil next to springs or brooks where there is cold, groundwater seepage. It also grows in northern swamps with black ash or tamarack. It can be planted on upland soil. Young trunks have a beautiful bronze luster. The twigs smell and taste of wintergreen.
